6 Furniture Care – How to Keep Furniture Looking Good and Last Long

Regardless of which room one is furnishing, the fact remains that good quality furniture comes with a cost. There are many ways to care for furniture – dusting, polishing and steam cleaning. The method will be determined by the materials which constitute a particular piece. To help care for furniture well, here are a few tips to keep everything in top shape.

  • Wood: Quite a lot of furniture is made of wood – dining tables, chairs, china cabinets etc. Wood has to be dusted on a regular basis to keep the surface free of dust and other build up. Dusting should be done with a lint free cloth – if the wood is finished well, it can be cleaned occasionally with mild soap and water. Rinse and dry thoroughly to avoid rot. Wood furniture should also not be exposed to direct sunlight as wood can warp and fade from the sun. Keep away from air vents as far as possible to avoid similar issues.

  • Metal/Wrought Iron Furniture: Metal furniture requires different treatment – dusting is a must. Most pieces can be wiped down occasionally with a damp cloth – preferably soft. If there is embedded dirt, it can be washed with soapy water, rinsed well and dried off with a soft material. Abrasive cleaners or strong detergents can pit and damage the finish as well as the metal.

  • Leather: Leather needs special care – most pieces come with instructions from the manufacturer on care. There are many good conditioners that can be bought and used for cleaning. These products not only clean but they also condition the leather to make it last a long time. In the absence of instructions, clean with a damp cloth and then dry.

  • Marble: Marble is a porous material and cleaning it has to be handled carefully. Marble furniture should be cleaned with lukewarm water and a clean cloth. The recommendation is to wash it with a mild detergent to remove build up – waxing marble is not recommended as it can lead to yellowing of the stone.

  • Wicker: Wicker and cane furniture have to be handled gently as well as they are made from natural materials. Vacuuming is very necessary – use a brush attachment to get all the dust out and then wash with mild soap and lukewarm water. Use a dry cloth to wipe surfaces down so that the wood doesn’t get damaged.

Taking care of furniture from the get go will ensure that they last a long time – it is not that hard to get tips on caring for furniture either.
